Details
The story
Awer Mabil is an Australian winger born in the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya to South Sudanese parents, who built a career in Denmark, Spain, and across Europe while earning over 35 caps for Australia.
Mabil moved to Adelaide as a child and rose through South Australian youth football before making his A-League debut for Adelaide United in 2013. He spent seven years at FC Midtjylland in Denmark — winning the Superliga and Danish Cup — interspersed with loan spells in Portugal and Turkey.
He then had stints at Cádiz in La Liga, Sparta Prague (winning the Czech league), and Grasshopper before joining CD Castellón in Spain. His crucial penalty in the 2022 World Cup intercontinental playoff against Peru helped Australia reach Qatar. He was named Young Australian of the Year in 2023.
