The story

James Trafford is an English goalkeeper who joined Manchester City from Burnley in 2025 after winning the EFL Championship Golden Glove award. He helped England's under-21 side win the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship without conceding a goal in the tournament.

Trafford came through Manchester City's academy and made his professional breakthrough via loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Bolton Wanderers. He joined Burnley permanently in 2023 and was outstanding in their Championship title-winning campaign of 2024–25, setting a record of 12 consecutive clean sheets and finishing with 29 clean sheets overall. He returned to Manchester City for a British goalkeeper record fee of £31 million. He was the undisputed first choice for England under-21s, conceding no goals across six matches at the 2023 UEFA U-21 Euros as England won the title, and won his first two senior caps in 2026.
