The story
Mathew Leckie is one of Australia's most experienced forwards, with 80 senior caps, three FIFA World Cup appearances, and a place in the 2015 AFC Asian Cup-winning squad. He was named captain of the Socceroos in May 2021.
Leckie began his career at Adelaide United before a prolonged stint in German football with Borussia Mönchengladbach, FSV Frankfurt, FC Ingolstadt 04 — where he won promotion to the Bundesliga in 2014–15 — and Hertha BSC. He returned to Australia with Melbourne City in 2021.
At Melbourne City, he won three A-League Premierships and was named Joe Marston Medal winner — Grand Final MVP — in 2025. Internationally, he scored a crucial goal against Denmark at the 2022 FIFA World Cup to help Australia advance from the group stage.
