La historia
Diogo Costa is Portugal's first-choice goalkeeper, renowned for his sweeping technique and penalty-saving ability — most notably saving all three penalties against Slovenia in the Euro 2024 round of 16.
Born in Switzerland to Portuguese parents, Costa relocated to Portugal at age seven and joined Porto's academy in 2011. He secured Porto's starting goalkeeper role in 2021, helping the club win two league and cup doubles and further Primeira Liga titles. His composure and ability as a sweeper-keeper have drawn repeated comparison to Europe's elite goalkeepers.
Internationally, Costa has 42 caps for Portugal as of late 2025, replacing veteran Rui Patrício as first choice. His defining moment came at Euro 2024 against Slovenia, where he saved all three penalties in the round-of-16 shootout — a first in European Championship history — to send Portugal into the quarter-finals. He contributed to the 2025 Nations League title.
