Gonzalo Montiel

Gonzalo Montiel is an Argentine right-back who returned to River Plate in January 2025 after spells in Europe, and is best known for scoring the decisive penalty kick to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup for Argentina. A reliable and technically sound defender, he has been a regular part of the national team squad.

Montiel developed through River Plate's academy, making his debut in 2016 and winning the Copa Libertadores in 2018. He transferred to Sevilla in 2021 for around €11 million, also winning the UEFA Europa League with them in 2022–23 and spending a loan season at Nottingham Forest.

He returned to River Plate in January 2025. His defining moment came in the 2022 World Cup final, when he converted the winning penalty in the shoot-out against France to make Argentina world champions.
