L'histoire
Guillermo Varela is a Uruguayan right-back whose career has taken him from Peñarol and Manchester United through Scandinavia and Eastern Europe before settling at Flamengo, where he has won Copa Libertadores honours. He has earned around 28 caps for Uruguay across two World Cup campaigns.
Varela came through Peñarol's ranks and moved to Manchester United in 2013, but loan spells at Real Madrid Castilla and Eintracht Frankfurt limited his Old Trafford impact. He returned to Peñarol in 2017 and won back-to-back Uruguayan league titles before departing for FC Copenhagen in 2019.
After a period at Dynamo Moscow, he joined Flamengo in 2022 and secured a permanent deal in 2023, adding Copa Libertadores and Brasileirão medals to his career collection.
