L'histoire

José María Giménez is a Uruguayan centre-back and long-serving pillar of Atlético Madrid's defence, where he has won two La Liga titles and a UEFA Europa League across more than 350 appearances for the club. One of Uruguay's most capped defenders, he has captained the national side and featured at three World Cups.

Giménez began his professional career at Danubio in Montevideo and moved to Atlético Madrid in 2013 at just 18 years old, rapidly establishing himself in Diego Simeone's defensive system. In his debut season he collected a La Liga title, and he went on to add a second league medal and European silverware over the following years.

He has grown into one of the club's most important figures and among the 31 players to reach 300 Atlético appearances across all competitions as of December 2023. Internationally he reached 99 caps, captained Uruguay and was selected for the 2019 Copa América Team of the Tournament.
