A história
Breel Embolo is a Swiss forward born in Cameroon who has earned 86 caps and 24 goals for Switzerland, featuring across three European Championships and two World Cups, and is known for respectfully declining to celebrate his goal against Cameroon at the 2022 World Cup.
Born in Yaoundé, Embolo moved to France as a child before settling in Switzerland at age six. He progressed through FC Basel's youth system and debuted professionally in March 2014, winning three consecutive Swiss Super League titles. He joined Schalke 04 in 2016 for €20 million but suffered a severe ankle injury that cost him nearly a full season. Spells at Borussia Mönchengladbach and AS Monaco followed.
In September 2025 he signed for Stade Rennais. His most memorable international moment came at the 2022 World Cup, when he scored against Cameroon — his birth nation — and stood still in a mark of respect rather than celebrate. He was a key figure in Switzerland's run to the Euro 2020 quarter-finals.
