A história
A technically gifted central midfielder known for his passing range, energy, and ability to play in multiple midfield roles, Fernández burst onto the world stage at the 2022 World Cup, winning the Young Player Award. Chelsea paid a British-record fee of approximately £106.8 million to sign him in January 2023.
Fernández progressed through River Plate's academy before a loan spell at Defensa y Justicia, where he won the Copa Sudamericana in 2020. Joining Benfica in 2022, he had an immediate impact and helped the club win the Primeira Liga. His 2022 World Cup performances — including a goal in the final — prompted Chelsea's record-breaking January 2023 purchase.
He was not part of the 2021 Copa América squad (his senior debut came in September 2022) but was a key member of Argentina's 2024 Copa América winning side. He also helped Chelsea win the UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup in 2025.
