La historia

Historia del club

Sweden, nicknamed Blågult (The Blue and Yellow), are one of Europe's traditional football nations with twelve World Cup appearances since 1934. Their finest hour came in 1958 when, as hosts, they reached the World Cup final before losing 5–2 to Brazil. Under coach Graham Potter and captain Victor Lindelöf, Sweden qualified for the 2026 World Cup through playoff victories.

Sweden played their first international on 12 July 1908, defeating Norway 11–3 in Gothenburg. From the mid-1940s through the late 1950s they were regarded as one of the greatest teams in Europe, winning Olympic gold in London in 1948 and reaching the bronze-medal match at the 1950 World Cup. The peak of that era came on home soil in 1958 — they swept through the tournament to the final before falling 5–2 to a Pelé-inspired Brazil.

After a quieter period, Sweden re-emerged as a force in the 1990s. Finishing third at USA 1994 — beating Bulgaria in the third-place play-off — they also hosted and reached the semi-finals of Euro 1992. The long Zlatan Ibrahimović era (2001–2016, briefly 2021–2022) brought consistent qualification and iconic moments, with Ibrahimović retiring as the all-time top scorer on 62 goals.

The post-Zlatan years were marked by inconsistency, including failure to qualify for Euro 2024. However, Sweden secured a berth at the 2026 World Cup through playoff victories, and won League C Group 1 in the 2024–25 UEFA Nations League under manager Jon Dahl Tomasson before Graham Potter took charge in October 2025.
