Club & Football History
Germany, known as Die Mannschaft, are one of the most successful national teams in football history — four-time World Cup winners, three-time European Champions, and perennial contenders on the global stage. Under coach Julian Nagelsmann and captain Joshua Kimmich, a new generation led by Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz is reshaping the team's identity.
The DFB was founded in 1900 and Germany played their first international on 5 April 1908, losing 3–5 to Switzerland in Basel. The team became a powerhouse with 'The Miracle of Bern' in 1954, when West Germany defeated the heavily favoured Hungarian side 3–2 in the World Cup final, launching decades of sustained success at the highest level.
West Germany went on to win the World Cup again in 1974 on home soil and in 1990, also claiming European Championship titles in 1972 and 1980. Reunified Germany added a third Euro in 1996 and a fourth World Cup in 2014, when Joachim Löw's side dismantled Brazil 7–1 in the semi-final before beating Argentina 1–0 in the final.
After a shock group-stage exit at the 2018 World Cup and another in 2022, Germany hosted UEFA Euro 2024 and reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by eventual champions Spain. The emergence of world-class young talents has renewed optimism ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
