La historia

Historia del club

Australia, nicknamed the Socceroos, are a seven-time World Cup participant and 2015 AFC Asian Cup champions who transferred from the OFC to the AFC confederation in 2006, reaching the Round of 16 twice — in 2006 and in a memorable 2022 Qatar run under Graham Arnold.

Football in Australia traces its roots to the late 19th century, but the national team did not play its first official international until 17 June 1922, a 3–1 loss to New Zealand in Dunedin. For decades Australia competed within the Oceania Football Confederation, winning the OFC Nations Cup four times (1980, 1996, 2000, 2004) while struggling to reach World Cups — qualifying only in 1974 before a breakthrough run of five consecutive tournaments from 2006.

In 2006 Australia switched confederation to the AFC, immediately reaching the World Cup Round of 16 in Germany where they fell to eventual champions Italy on a controversial late penalty. That same era produced the 2015 AFC Asian Cup triumph on home soil, with goals from Tim Cahill and a golden-boot campaign cementing their status as Asia's leading nation for a spell.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar showcased Australian resilience: the Socceroos topped their group (defeating Tunisia and Denmark), then eliminated Denmark before a narrow 2–1 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16. With Tony Popovic as head coach and goalkeeper Mathew Ryan as captain, Australia qualified for the 2026 World Cup and arrive ranked 27th in the world.
